Dick Segal has his own theory about how the COVID pandemic started, and at first it may seem rather fantastical, even whimsical, but there is a serious message behind this thought-provoking piece. Through Dick’s knowledge of the history of oriental art and culture, he recalled the scene of the dying Buddha being surrounded by all the animals of the world who had gathered to pay their respects, after all, in Buddhist lore the lives of all animals are sacred.

…What if all the animals of the world had finally had enough of the hunting, slaughter, poaching and cruelty and gathered to come up with a way to give the human race some of their own medicine? So, according to Dick, they did just that, but they didn’t come up with a medicine, but a virus. A virus that would cause the human race the anguish that the animals had been through, the being kept prisoner and the loss of liberty, the physical suffering and the lives lost.

nThis is ‘PAYBACK TIME’! In the piece the back-drop is the African savannah, where the animals have a brain-storming meeting, complete with white-board, laptop and clip-board. The lower portion of the piece depicts the apocalyptic human aftermath of that meeting, with it’s menacing coronavirus characters and heavily masked figures.
