…There are also very many different interpretations of the story; some have believed the red of the child’s cape represents the sun and the wolf, the night, which envelopes the sun, as in the natural cycles of day and night; others believe the act of Little Red Riding Hood emerging from the wolf’s stomach when the huntsman cuts it open, symbolises rebirth.
Well, everyone is entitled to their own interpretation and Dick Segal certainly sees it a little differently to others. In this subtly erotic piece, you can see all the elements of the usual story, the forest, the wolf, Grandma’s house-there is even a glimpse of Grandma’s bed, where the hungry wolf lay in disguise-however Dick wanted to represent the sexual tension and animalistic clash of force, between the girl in red, the ferocious wolf and the macho huntsman that comes to the rescue. The dripping blood on the axe and the wolf’s fangs add a gory horror film element for extra drama.
