They asked the team at The Artizen to bring creativity, style, and confidence into the room, while keeping one key element. Their bed. Although it had been repainted several times over the years to suit previous homes, the aim was to give it a final, considered finish and make it work seamlessly within the new design.
Unlike most projects, the colour palette did not begin with artwork. John and Nicola were drawn to wallpaper, and its rich pattern of navies, mustards, greens, and coppers became the starting point. To keep the space balanced, the wallpaper was used on a single feature wall, allowing it to make a statement without overpowering the room.
Carpet was removed in favour of hard flooring paired with a rug. This European style approach made the room easier to maintain, avoided worn traffic areas, and allowed flexibility if tastes change in the future.
The layout was completely reworked. A small built in wardrobe that offered little practical use was removed, opening the room and improving flow. The bed was repositioned centrally between two windows, improving symmetry and allowing natural ventilation. Bespoke blinds and curtains with blackout lining gave full control over light, something Nicola valued particularly in the mornings.
”This is the bedroom of our dreams. No matter where we travel, we always look forward to coming home to this space.

Art played a defining role in the finished space. A striking figurative piece by Aiden Kringen was paired with Balance, a sculpture by Brendan Murless, reflecting the sense of harmony the room was designed to create. These sat on a glass console table that also showcased John and Nicola’s perfume collection, adding a personal and characterful touch.
Soft lighting was layered throughout to create a boutique hotel feel in the evenings. The bed was dressed with cushions and throws that echoed the wallpaper and fabrics, while a bench at the foot of the bed added practicality and texture.
Additional artwork by Mellessuga introduced copper, teal, and blue tones, bringing the palette together beautifully. Subtle sketches by Andrei Protsouk added depth without overcrowding the space. Bedside cabinets were chosen to complement the flooring, ensuring a calm, cohesive finish.
Scent was carefully considered, completing the room with a sense of calm and relaxation.
John and Nicola describe this as the bedroom they always dreamed of but never thought possible. Despite travelling widely and staying in beautiful hotels around the world, they now look forward most to returning home. It is their own boutique retreat, and their favourite place to be.
